BOSTON - Suffolk University has been deeded 86 acres with 1,000 feet of frontage on the Penobscot River in Maine, where officials plan to develop a scientific study and research facility as well as a campus for the arts, humanities, creative and professional endeavors.
The property is located about 30 miles north of Bangor in Passadumeag. An inland riverfront facility, developed in 2004 for $3.5 million, will complement the university's R.S. Friedman Field Station on Cobscook Bay in Washington County, Maine, where it conducts environmental, biological and physical studies. The donation includes residential buildings and structures that have been earmarked for research and academic programs. The location is considered ideal for research into wind, solar, water and geothermal energy.
"This is an extraordinary gift that will serve to measurably enhance our science programs," said Barry Brown, acting president and provost of the Boston-based university. "The facility will provide our students and faculty with untold opportunities for scientific research as well as workshops, retreats, seminars and intensive study in the humanities and arts, as well as a location for programs for our professional schools."
